Why there is nothing to repair

Side and rear windows are tempered glass, not laminated. They are heat-treated so the surface is under compression and the core under tension. Break the surface anywhere and the whole pane releases at once into thousands of small pellets with blunt edges.

That is a safety feature — it is why you are sweeping gravel off the seat instead of pulling shards out of your arm. It is also why the window is replaced, never repaired. There is no piece left to fix.

It is the opposite of the windshield, which is laminated precisely so that it holds together and cracks rather than letting go.

What the job includes, beyond the glass

Fitting a new pane is the easy half. The part that separates a proper job from a quick one:

Where it happens most

Over January 2024 through September 16, 2026, the neighborhoods with the most vehicles broken into were Central Business District, Central City, Little Woods, Mid-City, 7th Ward.

The Central Business District leads with 585. But the ratio is more useful than the raw count: in some neighborhoods break-ins are a small share of the glass-breaking events and collisions dominate, while in others it is the reverse. Each neighborhood page on this site gives its own split.

The first hour matters, and not for the reason you think

Photograph it before you clean anything. The window, the interior, whatever was moved. If you are going to claim, that is the evidence, and it stops existing the moment you start tidying.

Get the NOPD item number. Every one of the 6,798 break-ins counted on this page is a call with a number attached. Insurers ask for it. Getting it on the day is straightforward; getting it a week later is not.

Do not leave it parked in the same spot. A car that has already been opened, still sitting on the same street with a bag taped over the window, is the easiest target on the block. If the glass cannot be done today, move the car.

Cover the opening properly if you must. Plastic sheet and tape on the outside of the frame, not across the paint, and not so it blocks your mirrors when you drive.

Questions we get asked

Can a broken side window be repaired instead of replaced?

No. Tempered glass has no intermediate state — it is intact or it is pellets. Replacement is the only option, which is also why the job is usually quicker and simpler than a windshield.

Do I need to be there while it is done?

Not usually. Most side window work is done on the vehicle wherever it is parked, which is the reason mobile service exists. You do need to be able to unlock the car and have the shop get into the door.

Should I vacuum the glass out myself first?

Clear the loose pellets off the seats if you want, but leave the door alone. The ones that matter are inside the door skin, under the regulator, and reaching them means taking the door card off. That is part of the job you are paying for.
