Windshield Chip and Crack Repair in New Orleans
Repair is cheaper and faster than replacement, and it keeps the factory seal. It also has
real limits, and a shop that pretends otherwise is selling you a repair that will fail.
What a repair actually does
A chip is a break in the outer layer of the laminated glass, with air trapped in the cavity —
that is why it looks white or silver. A repair pulls the air out under vacuum and pushes clear resin in
under pressure, then cures it with ultraviolet light.
Two things come out of that. The break stops spreading, because the cavity is no longer a weak point
with air in it. And the mark mostly disappears, because the resin has a refractive index close to glass.
Mostly — a repair is not invisible, and any shop that promises invisible is overselling.
The four questions that decide it
Before anything else, look at the damage and answer these:
- How big is it? A chip up to roughly the size of a coin is normal repair territory. A long
running crack is not.
- Where is it? Directly in front of the driver, a repair leaves slight distortion exactly where
you look most. Many shops will decline it there, and they are right to.
- How close to the edge? Within a couple of inches of the edge, the glass is carrying structural
load and the crack has a clear path to run. That usually means replacement.
- How old is it? A fresh break is clean. One that has been collecting road grime and rainwater
for two months holds dirt that the resin cannot displace, and the repair shows.
Why New Orleans is hard on chips
A chip does not stay a chip. It grows when the glass flexes or when the temperature across it changes
quickly — and both happen constantly here.
Blasting the air conditioning onto a windshield that has been sitting in the sun is a temperature
shock across a sheet of glass with a flaw in it. So is a summer downpour onto hot glass. So is a pothole
on a street that flexes the shell. None of these are dramatic; they just keep happening, and a crack only
has to run once.
The practical takeaway is simple: a chip is a small job this week and a whole windshield next month.
What to do in the meantime
If you cannot get it seen immediately: put a piece of clear tape over the chip to keep dirt and water
out of the cavity, park in shade where you can, and go easy on the air conditioning aimed at the glass.
Do not use an off-the-shelf resin kit if you intend to have it repaired properly afterwards — a badly
filled cavity cannot be re-done, and it turns a repairable chip into a replacement.
Questions we get asked
Will the chip disappear completely after repair?
No, and be wary of anyone who says it will. A good repair restores most of the clarity and stops the break from spreading, but a faint mark usually remains where the cavity was. The point of the repair is structural, not cosmetic.
Can a long crack be repaired?
Sometimes a single long crack can be stabilised, but the further it has run and the closer it is to the edge, the less sense it makes. Once it reaches the edge of the glass the answer is replacement, because the edge is the part that carries load.
Does repairing a chip affect the camera behind the mirror?
A repair leaves the glass in place, so the camera is not disturbed and does not need recalibrating. That is one of the quiet advantages of repairing early: it keeps you out of the whole calibration question.
