Windshield Replacement in New Orleans
The NOPD recorded 42,135 collisions inside the city between January 2024 and September 16, 2026 — about 42.6 every day. Not all of them break glass. Enough of them do.
When the glass has to come out
A windshield is not a window. It is laminated — two sheets of glass bonded either side of a
plastic interlayer — and it is glued into the body shell as a structural part. It helps the roof resist
crushing and it is what the passenger airbag pushes against when it deploys. That is why the rules for
repairing it are stricter than people expect.
Replacement, rather than repair, is the answer when any of these are true:
- the crack has reached the edge of the glass, where the bond carries load
- the damage sits in the driver's direct line of sight, where even a good repair leaves distortion
- there are several breaks, or one longer than a banknote
- the inner layer is damaged, not just the outer one
If none of those apply, ask about repair first. It is faster and it keeps the factory seal, which is
never worse than a new one.
The part nobody mentions until the day: calibration
On a great many vehicles built in the last decade, the camera for lane keeping, automatic emergency
braking and adaptive cruise is mounted on the windshield, behind the mirror. Take the glass out
and the camera's aim changes with it.
After the new glass goes in, that system has to be recalibrated — either statically, against a
target board at a measured distance, or dynamically, by driving a set pattern while the system relearns.
Some vehicles need both. It is not an upsell; an uncalibrated camera can brake for something that is not
there, or fail to brake for something that is.
What this means for you: give the year, make and model when you ask for a quote. A shop that
knows in advance brings the right glass and the right equipment. A shop that finds out on the day goes
away and comes back.
Where the collisions actually are
Collisions are not spread evenly. Over January 2024 through September 16, 2026 the heaviest were
Central Business District, Central City, Tulane–Gravier, Mid-City, 7th Ward. The Central Business District alone logged 3,783 —
more than ten a week, every week, for nearly three years.

Who is licensed for this in New Orleans
The city's occupational licence register lists 3 businesses under
Automotive Glass Replacement Shops, plus 7 licensed as glass and
glazing contractors — a category that covers buildings as much as vehicles. That is 10
glass licences in a city of roughly four hundred thousand people.
Most of the outfits advertising windshield replacement here hold a different licence — body shop,
general repair, mobile service — or none on file at all. That is not automatically a problem, and it is
worth knowing before you hand over the keys.
Questions we get asked
How long does a windshield replacement take?
The glass itself goes in fairly quickly. What sets the real timing is the adhesive: urethane needs time to cure before the vehicle is safe to drive, and the required wait depends on the specific product, the temperature and the humidity — all three of which matter in New Orleans. The shop doing the work will give you a safe drive-away time. Ask for it, and do not treat it as a suggestion.
Can I drive with a cracked windshield in Louisiana?
Ask the shop or your insurer about your specific damage rather than relying on a rule of thumb, because what matters is whether the damage obstructs the driver's view — and that is a judgement about your glass, not a number. Separately from any law: a crack that has already run will keep running, and heat, cold water and a pothole all push it along.
Is aftermarket glass as good as the original?
It can be, and it can also be noticeably worse — the variation is between manufacturers, not between the labels. What matters more on a modern car is whether the glass has the right brackets, sensors, heating elements and acoustic layer for your vehicle, and whether the camera can be calibrated through it afterwards. Ask what brand is being fitted and whether calibration is included.
