Mobile Auto Glass Service in New Orleans
Mobile service is usually sold on convenience. In New Orleans there is a harder reason:
large parts of the city have no shop to drive to.
The gap, counted
We read all 295 motor-trade licences the city has on file and placed 274
of them inside a named neighborhood. The result is lopsided. Of the 61 neighborhoods with enough
recorded activity to measure, 19 contain no licensed motor-trade business of any kind
— not a glass shop, not a body shop, not a garage.
Those neighborhoods still had their share of the 6,798 break-ins and 42,135
collisions. The work happens there. The shops are somewhere else.
When mobile is the right call
- The car should not be driven. A smashed side window in the rain, or a windshield you cannot see
through properly, is not something to drive across town to a bay.
- The car will not be driven. If it was broken into overnight and you are at work, the van meeting
it in the car park is the whole point.
- There is nowhere nearby to take it. See above.
When the shop is the right call
Mobile is not always better, and it is worth knowing where it struggles.
Adhesive needs conditions. Urethane cures by reacting with moisture in the air, and its behaviour
depends on temperature and humidity. New Orleans gives you extremes of both. A bonded windshield fitted in a
downpour, or on a car that has been baking in a July car park, is not the same job as one fitted in a
controlled bay.
Static calibration needs space. Recalibrating a windshield camera against a target board needs a
level surface, a measured distance and even lighting. A sloping street does not provide that. Some vehicles
can be calibrated dynamically on a drive instead; some cannot.
The honest version is: side windows are ideal for mobile work, and windshields with cameras on cars that
need static calibration are better done at a shop. Ask which yours is.
The neighborhoods with nothing inside them
These are the parts of New Orleans where the city's licence register lists no motor-trade business
at all — no glass shop, no body shop, no garage — and yet each one recorded enough broken glass to
measure:
Lower Garden District 1,532 · French Quarter 1,239 · Gentilly Terrace 989 · Audubon 893 · Lakeview 690 · Lakewood 643 · Dixon 634 · City Park 571 · Uptown 519 · Lake Catherine 339 · St. Anthony 233 · East Carrollton 180 · Lake Terrace & Oaks 176 · Garden District 173 · St. Thomas 164 · Gentilly Woods 155 · West End 149 · Whitney 143 · Iberville 141
The number after each name is how many glass-breaking events the NOPD logged there over
January 2024 through September 16, 2026. Every one of those had to be fixed by someone who came from somewhere else.
What to have ready before the van arrives
- the year, make and model, and whether there is a camera housing behind the mirror
- somewhere the vehicle can sit undisturbed afterwards if there is adhesive curing
- the car unlocked or you nearby — a door window means getting inside the door
- if it was a break-in, the NOPD item number, for your insurer rather than for the shop
Questions we get asked
Is mobile service more expensive?
We do not publish prices, because the honest answer depends on the glass, the vehicle and whether calibration is involved. What we can say is that the choice between mobile and shop should be driven by whether the job can be done properly where the car is, not by which is cheaper.
Can they do it in my apartment car park?
Usually, provided the van can reach the vehicle and there is room to work around it. Covered parking is often an advantage rather than an obstacle, because it keeps sun and rain off during the work.
What if it rains?
For a bonded windshield, rain is a real problem rather than an inconvenience, and a shop that reschedules for weather is doing the right thing. A side window is far less sensitive.
